Level Up: Gaming, Writing, Storytelling

12 April, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Gaming is increasingly being recognised as a space for storytelling. Bringing together a panel of games writers and authors, this session will explore the complex relationship between gaming and writing fiction. How far are today’s games influenced by literature – and for authors who are also gamers, how does gaming influence their writing?

Join us at BAFTA for a discussion about storytelling, narrative, page and screen – including how books and games can inspire each other, and what literature might learn from gaming’s creative approaches.

Speakers include:

  • Gabrielle Kent has been named (not once but thrice) one of the Top 100 most influential women in the games industry. She now lectures in computer games development at Teesside University, where she directs the Animex Festival. She is the author of the Alfie Bloom children’s book series for Scholastic.
  • Rhianna Pratchett is an award-winning scriptwriter, story designer and general narrative paramedic. Rhianna has worked on titles such as Tomb Raider, Heavenly Sword and Overlord, and contributed to several books on gaming.
  • Rob Morgan is a game writer and narrative designer (whatever that is). He wrote the Augmented Reality PlayStation title Wonderbook: Book of Spells in collaboration with J.K. Rowling, and recently finished work on ‘The Assembly VR’, due out for PSVR, Vive and Oculus. He is currently developing a site-specific AR audio theatre piece, and is Speaker-in-Residence at VideoBrains.
  • Keeping them in line will be writer and journalist Leigh AlexanderLeigh writes about tech culture for the Guardian, and was most recently editor-in-chief of Offworld, Boing Boing’s site dedicated to unsung voices and alternative culture in video games. Leigh has also written for a game universe. Her upcoming novella Monitor contributes to the Android Netrunner series.
