The Bluestocking Club and English PEN present: Fahrenheit 451

17 March, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it — Ray Bradbury

In an unnamed town, at an unnamed time, a repressive government hopes to keep its citizens blind and unquestioning by outlawing the one thing that could inspire rebellion: books. Although Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 was published over six decades ago, sales of the cult classic are on the rise again today…

In celebration of the power of the written word, The Bluestocking Club is teaming up this month with English PEN for a special London Book and Screen Week showing of the 1966 adaption of the dystopian masterpiece, directed by Francois Truffaut and starring Julie Christie, Oscar Werner, and Cyril Cusack.  Comedian and activist Shaista Aziz will introduce the film and discuss its relevance today.

Join us for a thought-provoking and entertaining evening at Waterstones Tottenham Court — where, thankfully, you will be surrounded by books it’s still totally legal to buy.

English PEN is a registered charity that promotes the freedom to write and the freedom to read in the UK and around the world. We speak out for writers, bloggers, publishers, translators and journalists at risk, take our love of books to new audiences at events and community workshops all year round, and get the written word out by helping British publishers to support the best in world literature.

The Bluestocking Club is inspired by the original Bluestockings of the eighteenth century. It merges book and film club with a programme of thought-provoking literary adaptations from period drama to film noir to sci-fi.
