Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn
The year is 2045, overcrowding, global warming, pollution and poverty have turned the world into a harsh reality. But the virtual world is clean and bright, and you can be anyone that you desire – including man, monster or treasure hunter. Wade Watts escapes his reality by plugging into the immersive OASIS, chasing a riddle left by the founder James Halliday – a contest to become Halliday’s sole heir, controller of the VR realm and winner of his immense fortune.
Jam-packed with Easter eggs and nostalgia, Ready Player One is a love-letter to the nerd culture of the eighties. With cameos including King Kong, Lara Croft, the DeLorean, and the Iron Giant this film could easily feel gimmicky, but Steven Spielberg walks the fine line between nostalgia and an action-packed plot, and the result is a beautifully balanced cinematic masterpiece that feels true to his legacy.
Ready Player One is based on the best-selling debut novel by Ernest Cline, published in 2011 by Crown Publishing Group, Penguin Random House. The audiobook was narrated by Wil Wheaton, who is mentioned in the book as an OASIS politician (and keep your eyes peeled for a sneaky film cameo too). This is a book to film adaptation that has been lovingly crafted by an expert, Spielberg is at his best – and revealing himself as the eighties pop-culture uber-nerd that we always knew him to be.
Only just released in cinemas, Ready Player One is one to watch, read, and listen to.
